My name is Ben Viney, and I am a sound engineer trained at the University of Salford. I graduated in Music Tech at Access To Music London with a level 3 extended diploma, which introduced me to recording, mixing and mastering audio to a professional standard. That being said, I am always keen to learn more. My audio experience has gone beyond music, and more into my personal passions of film and videogames.

Throughout my career, I have produced several EPs and soundtracks, alongside continuous recording work on an independent sound design library. One of the soundtracks were for a professional short film by students with Oxford University funding, which was also the first film set I worked on for boom mic capture. While I am well versed in professional studio environments, a significant part of my recording experience is in custom recording spaces I set up at home.

One of my first academic dissertations I wrote was ‘How does music and sound design inform narrative in modern media?’, exploring the use of sound in contemporary storytelling. My work in soundtracks, soundscapes and foley has been largely informed by this study, and is an often revisited focal point of my professional career.

Along with my qualification, I was nationally voted by the Access Creative College Federation for the ‘LIVE SOUND STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2019’ award. Both the students and teachers made excellent colleagues for a two years that greatly shaped me and my chosen career path.
While my experiences primarily apply to studio production, I am also trained and experienced in engineering for live events, in which I am able to work solo or with a team, depending on the size of the event, as well as the importance that sound plays. This background knowledge in a more active part of the sound industry has enabled me to enter other parts of the audio engineering field, exemplary in my sound design work.
Months before finishing my diploma course, I began freelance work as a live gig engineer at 26 Leake Street, Waterloo. A year later, I was taken on as an intern for 2 weeks at the Miloco Orinoco Studio HQ in London, initially created in the 1990s by Damon Albarn’s engineer, Ben Hillier.

Since then, I have acquired a Bachelor of Science in Sound Engineering and Production, graduating at the University of Salford in 2024.
While I am open to opportunities for work experience, starting work in new places usually requires several prior visits, so I may shadow another engineer to fully understand the setup at any particular venue or studio.
